On Friday 5th June 2020 we secured a £24,190 grant from The National Lottery Community Fund. The funding will ensure the people we support are equipped and able to fully participate in arts, crafts, activities, competitions and online engagements with their friends whilst our on-site social enterprise service is closed.

It was with great sadness that we received the news that Mike Holland had passed away on 7th January 2020. Mike had been involved with Andover and District Mencap since the 1980’s, his daughter Sally was born with learning disabilities which was how the family started their long association with the charity.

One young man, Jonathon Hall, brought something very precious to his community. He brought change, but not only change but dignity, choice and independence for many learning disabled adults.

Christmas cards are on the decline with 49% of the British population preferring to send holiday greetings online. In the office and at local companies, however, cards are still a preferred way to mark special occasions. At Christmas big company sections often choose to donate the money their staff would spend on Christmas cards. This saves on embarrassment and for some cuts out the middleman.

Recently we have received a number of enquiries and concerns about learning disabled people who have been issued with a fine because they have been told that they are not exempt from healthcare charges such as prescription costs, dental and eye care charges. Obviously, there is confusion as the people concerned are on benefits and have assumed that they are exempt from charges.

This decision followed discussions in relation to Royal Mencap’s planned partnership agreement and the desire of the organisation to keep its own identity and build upon its work within Andover and the surrounding district.

Government changes to 'sleep-in' payments are threatening to take away vital support from thousands of disabled people. This support allows them to live a safe and independent life in the community. The care sector has been landed with a massive £400 million bill and many providers now face bankruptcy. This could mean the end of social care as we know it. The Government are being asked to urgently commit to paying this bill as the sector cannot afford it. Government caused this problem only they can fix it.
